London Underground Metro Upgrades Optimisation

The challenge
London Underground asked us to identify how the private-partner plans for implementing new enhanced rolling stock and signalling could be optimised to improve performance while still reducing energy usage and costs.

The solution
We developed a modelling and simulation process that revealed the combined whole-life costs and benefits of alternative train system options.

The project involved:

  • Facilitating joint technical working groups between London Underground and the private partners (Metronet/ Tube Lines) to identify feasible options.
  • Modelling various financial impacts on London Underground and the private partners.
  • Creating best-case options with results of business case analysis.
  • Keeping stakeholders involved to enable buy-in.
  • Project management of conceptual design.
  • Project initiation and implementation. We developed the project and obtained funding approval where required to the point at which the project was handed over to internal departments to implement.

The result
Cogitare has successfully reduced the forecast energy consumption of several London Underground Line Upgrades by approximately 20% and reduced whole-life costs by about £200 million per line whilst maintaining or improving performance.
